Judge orders release of redacted portions of Jeffrey Epstein files
The Justice Department must publish the omitted information or explain why it decided to keep it hidden
A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to reveal the censored content on the disclosed pages of the Jeffrey Epstein case files, which include several emails about videos and sexual activity with underage women, or justify why it decided to suppress that content.
US Judge Emmet Sullivan gave President Donald Trump's government until July 2 to comply with the order.
The order seeks to make the hidden content of the files transparent
The injunction comes in connection with a lawsuit filed by independent journalist Katie Phang, who alleges that the Department of Justice has withheld important information that the public has a right to know.
Among the information blacked out by the US government are "at least eight email exchanges with Mr. Epstein regarding a 'torture video' and sexual activity with young women, including minors," according to the Washington-based judge's order.
The censored interview of a woman who claimed she was abused by US President Donald Trump when she was a minor is also required to be released.
Additionally, the DOJ was ordered to release a detailed record of all redacted parties in the files released about Epstein.
The Trump Administration has been criticized for its handling of the Epstein files. Last February, the DOJ removed thousands of documents related to the case from its website after it was reported that the victims' identities had been compromised.
Lawyers for the survivors claimed that deficiencies in the editing of the files had “disrupted” the lives of almost 100 victims.
The release of the files had been ordered after the approval of a measure by both houses of Congress that forced the DOJ to make public documents related to Epstein.
Millions of documents, including emails and photographs, related to federal investigations into Epstein and his 2019 death while in custody awaiting trial have been revealed since last December, but many of them are redacted.
