Michael David McKee, a Chicago surgeon, was sent to an Ohio jail accused of murdering his ex-wife and her husband
Michael David McKee, a surgeon originally from Chicago, accused of murdering his ex-wife and her husband, was jailed in Ohio on Tuesday, as legal proceedings continue in one of the most high-profile criminal cases in the United States in recent weeks.
McKee, 39, was booked into jail Tuesday after being formally indicted on January 16 by a Franklin County grand jury on charges of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, with an aggravating circumstance related to the use of a firearm suppressor, according to court records. Accused of double murder in Ohio. McKee is accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife, Monique Tepe, 39, and her current husband, dentist Spencer Tepe, 37, at the couple's Columbus home on December 30. McKee and Tepe divorced in 2017. Authorities released a new photograph of the accused after he was booked into the Ohio jail. McKee was previously arrested in Rockford, Illinois, by federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), shortly after 10:30 a.m. on January 10, while at a restaurant near his medical office. Following his arrest, McKee was taken to the Winnebago County Detention Center. He later waived his right to an extradition hearing and was placed in the custody of authorities for transfer to Ohio. His court appearance in Illinois is scheduled for January 23.
Video captured the Ohio murder suspect
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant previously said that investigators believe McKee is the person captured on security camera walking through an alley near the victims' home on the night of the murders.
Additionally, the suspect's vehicle was identified traveling in the area, and a weapon recovered at his Illinois residence matched ballistic evidence found at the crime scene.
Although authorities have not specified the type of weapon used.
The case generated widespread national attention after several days of uncertainty. Police reported that there were no signs of forced entry into the home, no weapon was found at the scene, and investigators ruled out the murder-suicide hypothesis from the outset.
Authorities indicated that no robberies were reported and that the couple's two young children and their dog were unharmed.
OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, where McKee worked, confirmed that the doctor has been suspended from his duties and that the institution is fully cooperating with the investigation.
Authorities stated that they will continue to provide information as the legal process unfolds.
