Social Security: who will receive a double payment in October despite the government shutdown
Some Social Security beneficiaries will receive two payments in October. It's not extra money. We explain who receives it, despite the government shutdown
Amid the partial shutdown of the federal government, many citizens in the United States are concerned about the immediate future of their benefits. One of the most common fears is whether Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments could be interrupted. The good news is that, despite the political situation, payments are continuing as scheduled. In fact, some beneficiaries will receive two deposits during the month of October, although this has nothing to do with the budget conflict.
Why will there be two Social Security payments in October?
This month, those who receive SSI benefits will notice that two payments will be issued. The first was deposited on October 1, as usual. The second will be issued on Friday, October 31, even though it corresponds to the month of November.
This happens because November 1 falls on a Saturday, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) does not make deposits on weekends or holidays. Therefore, the money is advanced to the last business day of the previous month. This isn't an additional payment, but rather a schedule reshuffle to avoid delays.
Government shutdown doesn't affect payments
Social Security is part of the federal government's mandatory spending program, meaning it's not subject to the annual budget or congressional appropriations decisions. Therefore, payments remain stable, even during a government shutdown.
"The SSA hasn't missed a single payment in 90 years, and it's not going to start now," said Max Richtman, president of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
The schedule is moving along as normal. For example, payments scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, have already been delivered to beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of the month. Those born between the 11th and 20th will receive their payment on Wednesday the 15th, and those whose birthdays are between the 21st and 31st will receive it on Wednesday the 22nd. All deposits will be made on time, the SSA confirmed.
What services might be affected?
Although payments are assured, some non-urgent administrative services may experience delays or temporary suspensions due to the closure. This includes processes such as:
However, the SSA indicated that about 90% of staff remains active, so essential functions are covered.
How are payments received?
Currently, more than 99% of Social Security payments are made electronically. This can be through direct deposits to bank accounts or through the Direct Express card, intended for those without access to traditional financial services. This delivery method helps ensure efficiency, even during times of political uncertainty.
Amounts vary by benefit type. On average:
Although the current political climate may generate concerns, Social Security and SSI beneficiaries can rest assured that their payments will continue to arrive on time, even in months where the calendar or the government creates complications.
Social Security beneficiaries should remain alert to this type of news, because doubts and lack of information can cause them to fall into some scams. The United States government warned that some criminals take advantage of the uncertainty generated by a government shutdown to generate fear in the population, with a supposed pause in benefits, tricking them, stealing their information and even their money.
