The reason to support Prop. 50 is simple: stop Trump
As an immigrant and son of immigrants, I ask you to vote for the measure that could give Latino families a break.
There are plenty of reasons; they can be human, ethical, social, and political. The important thing is that the Latino community, immigrant or not, must support Proposition 50 on November 4th.
There is no other option; the main thing right now is to stop the cruel and inhumane hunt that the immigration policies of Trump executes the Latino community in the streets of the United States.
Since June 6, almost daily we wake up to news of deportations with levels of violence and cruelty that are hard to believe, with arrests that leave you frustrated and powerless to do anything to stop this hunt for migrants.
The worst of all is that it happens in broad daylight, in public squares, hospitals, courts and schools among other places where unidentified agents, wearing masks and even without license plates on their vehicles, kidnap people like true criminals.
The consequences: divided and destroyed families, children, young people or mothers crying and desperate to try to avoid the deportation of a family member; while Community Patrols or neighborhood groups question and oppose the arrests of immigrants and then get arrested too.
This situation cannot continue, we as a nation are much better than what is seen today on the streets, let us remember that this country has been and will continue to be founded by migrants, but we have to participate, we have to get involved and next Tuesday, November 4th is our opportunity.
If Proposition 50 is approved in California, we will have the hope of winning more Democratic seats and with a little luck, increasing the Democratic counterweight to the Republicans in the House of Representatives, that way the Democratic Party would have a better chance of blocking immigration measures that continue to affect our community.
In addition, Democrats will also have more political power to prevent cuts in social or environmental programs, education, health and civil rights that affect the most vulnerable: the elderly, low-income people, women or the LGBQT+ community, among others.
This will also give California more power and political influence at the national level to help counter the anti-minority measures and occurrences that come out of the White House daily.
Fortunately, according to a Pew Research Center survey, 54% of all Americans, Republicans and Democrats, disapprove of Trump's workplace immigration policies; While 57% of people, according to a Quinnipiac University survey, disapprove of the way ICE is enforcing immigration laws.
Let's remember that if Prop. 50 is not approved, Texas has already increased its number of districts and that will simply give him more power to approve in the House of Representatives, apply and continue with any anti-immigrant measure that the president comes up with.
This is our opportunity to counteract some of the damage that President Trump has caused to our society, do not let the ads of famous Republicans like Arnold Schwarzenegger or any other type of propaganda confuse you, even those Republicans who say they do not support Trump, but always end up voting in favor of his proposals.
If we have learned anything from the federal administration in these nine months, it is that Trump has no limits and is willing to do anything to meet his goal of deporting three thousand immigrants a day, that means three thousand families destroyed and divided and more death for more families.
So it's time to take action and do something about the raids. Don't let immigration policies get worse, vote YES on Proposition 50 on November 4th.
