Trump demands Republican senators remove the 60-vote rule and end the government shutdown
Trump urged Republicans to use the
Trump referred to the so-called 'filibuster rule' in English. Party filibuster is the Senate rule that requires the agreement of 60 of its 100 members to pass most bills.
Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a 219-213 majority in the House of Representatives.
“It is time for Republicans to play their 'master card' and go for the so-called nuclear option: Eliminate Party Firing, and eliminate it NOW!” Trump wrote on social media.
Republican senators have ruled out changing the rules to abolish party filibuster, arguing that it would ultimately benefit Democrats the next time they regain power, but Trump said Republicans should act now to immediately end the government shutdown.
The shutdown began on October 1, the first day of the 2026 federal fiscal year, because Republicans and Congressional Democrats are unable to agree on legislation to fund the federal government. Approximately 750,000 federal workers have been furloughed since government funding was interrupted. The Trump administration has taken steps to pay troops, federal law enforcement, and immigration officials, but other federal employees are working without pay. Furthermore, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which benefits some 42 million people, will run out of funding next Saturday, forcing state and local governments and food assistance organizations to take action.to address the crisis of millions of adults and children who will not have enough food.
