Trump says the war between Israel and Hamas is over
The US president will travel to Israel and Egypt to celebrate the ceasefire and urge his allies in the Middle East to build a lasting peace
“The war is over. The war is over, do you understand?” Trump said from Air Force One shortly after departing Washington for his trip to the Middle East.
The president made this statement after being asked about a comment by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which suggested that Israel's military operations had not completely ended.
Trump, who will meet with the families of the hostages on Monday and later address the Israeli parliament (Knesset), also said he believes the ceasefire in Gaza will hold.
In that sense, the Republican noted that one of the reasons he believes the agreement will hold is because people are “tired” of the conflict.
“This is a very special moment, it's very important, I hope you tell your networks, this has everyone very happy and very excited. Yesterday, there were gatherings of some 500,000 people in Israel, and the Arab world is also very excited. We are seeing something unprecedented; this is the first time we've seen all parties excited, positive, and participating in something so important. We are about to see something unprecedented,” he reiterated.
The president said that now both sides in the conflict “are happy.”
The agreement includes the release of hostages, the partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and the opening of humanitarian channels for the supply of food and medicine, marking a temporary ceasefire in the region after two years of violence.
“Everyone is happy, whether they are Jews, Muslims, or Arab countries; all countries are dancing in the streets. And it's a moment I don't think will be seen again,” the president noted.
Trump also plans to travel to Egypt, where he and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will host a summit to discuss the Gaza peace process with more than 20 countries.
