More of the Mercedes GLC electric that search challenge a Tesla
Mercedes is preparing to present the new electric GLC in September, a redesigned SUV from the ground up that represents the brand most ambitious bet
Mercedes-Benz wants to correct course. After a series of initial setbacks in its transition to electric mobility, the German brand is betting heavily on a complete overhaul of its range.
One of the most anticipated launches of the year is the new generation of the GLC, a midsize SUV that has earned a prominent place in the brand's global sales. This time, things change: the GLC will also come in a 100% electric version to compete directly with giants like the Tesla Model Y.
This move is part of the largest product offensive in recent Mercedes history. And the GLC won't be a simple update.
The redesign includes a new platform, more technology, improved interior space, and performance figures that seek to command respect in the competitive premium electric SUV segment.
A completely new platform
The new electric version of the GLC is based on the 800-volt MB.EA platform, specially designed to optimize efficiency and accelerate charging times.
This architecture will be the backbone of the brand's future electric models, marking a significant evolution compared to what Mercedes has offered so far.
One of the key changes is the longer wheelbase, which increases by 8 centimeters to 2.97 meters. This translates into a more spacious cabin and a more generous cargo area.
The trunk will offer a minimum of 570 liters and up to 1,740 liters with the rear seats folded down. In addition, there will be a 128-liter frunk or second compartment in the front.
In terms of comfort, the new GLC will adopt technologies inherited from the S-Class, such as the AIRMATIC air suspension, designed to offer a smooth driving experience, even in difficult terrain conditions.
Improved autonomy and ultra-fast charging
One of the areas where Mercedes has paid special attention is autonomy. Although the exact battery capacity has not yet been revealed, it is estimated that the longest-range version of the GLC will be able to travel more than 700 kilometers on a single charge.
What the brand has confirmed is that the new GLC will be able to recover up to 260 kilometers of autonomy in just 10 minutes, thanks to its compatibility with charging stations of up to 320 kW.
This represents a significant change compared to previous launches such as the electric CLA, whose limited infrastructure was the subject of criticism.
In addition, the system will be adaptable depending on the country, also allowing recharging at 400-volt stations through the use of a direct current converter.
Design and connectivity at the height of the premium segment
Aesthetically, the new GLC will maintain an elegant silhouette with sporty touches, integrating the Kodo design language with a fastback-type body.
The dimensions reach 4.85 meters long, 1.93 wide and 1.62 meters tall, which places it as a mid-to-large SUV. Its highlights include two-level LED headlights, digital rearview mirrors, 21-inch wheels, and a closed front grille with an illuminated frame.
Inside, the centerpiece will be a 26.45-inch curved 5K touchscreen, with most controls integrated digitally. It also incorporates a 100-inch Head-Up Display with 3D projection and eye tracking.
The front seats, type "Zero Gravity", will have heating, ventilation, a massage function and speakers integrated into the headrests.
Optionally, buyers can equip it with a 23-speaker Dolby Atmos sound system, independent rear screens and next-generation connectivity compatible with 5G networks.
Global production with expansion ambitions
The official presentation of the new Mercedes GLC will take place on September 7 at the Munich Motor Show. There, the brand is expected to confirm more details about the plug-in hybrid versions that will be added to the portfolio months after the launch of the electric variant.
Although it is initially intended for Europe, its arrival in America is not ruled out, especially if production manages to stabilize and export conditions are favorable.
Mercedes has not confirmed official prices, but specialized media estimate that its entry price could be around $ 55,000 dollars, while the most equipped versions could exceed $ 70,000 dollars.
