Nissan Z, the best-selling sports car in the United States
After years of uncertainty and declining sales, the Nissan Z managed to reverse course in 2025 with a 160% increase in sales during the first half of the year
Over the past decade, Nissan faced complex challenges in the United States, with a product range that was losing momentum against the competition and a declining financial outlook.
However, in the midst of that storm, an unexpected light emerged: the Nissan Z, the The brand's sports car that seemed doomed to oblivion is now experiencing a remarkable comeback.

What many anticipated as its final farewell ended up becoming one of the engines of recovery for the Japanese company.
Amid historically low figures for sports vehicles, the Nissan Z has re-emerged strongly, surpassing traditional competitors and obtaining a prominent place among the best-selling sports cars in the United States.
Far from the media hype of other models, the Nissan Z has built its success in a discreet but consistent manner.
In the first half of 2025, it managed to sell 3,789 units, which represents a growth of 160.1% compared to the same period in 2024. In the first quarter of the year alone, the increase had already been 108%, with 1,635 units sold.
These results place it above traditionally strong models like the Toyota Supra, the BMW Z4, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the Subaru BRZ and even the new Dodge Charger Daytona EV, all within the competitive sports coupe segment.
The defeated rival: Toyota Supra
For years, the Toyota Supra was the benchmark among Japanese sports cars. Its bold design, performance figures and mystique among enthusiasts gave it a special place.
However, in 2025 its panorama changed drastically. Sales of the Supra fell by 17.7% in the first half of the year, with only 1,231 units sold.
The reason behind this drop is not only the preference for the Nissan Z. Toyota announced the end of production of the Supra by 2026,which drastically reduced the volume of available units, making their price more expensive.
The farewell edition, called Final Edition, will be limited to only 1,300 units and its value has doubled compared to previous versions, exceeding $60,000 dollars.
This context has played in favor of Nissan. With a much more competitive base price - around $42,000 dollars - the Z is presented as a more affordable alternative, without sacrificing power or style.
Mechanics designed for the driver
Part of the appeal of the Nissan Z lies in its mechanical configuration. It mounts a 3.0-liter DOHC 24-valve twin-turbo V6 engine, capable of generating 400 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque from 1,600 rpm. This package allows for an ideal balance between sporty performance and everyday usability.
While the Mazda MX-5 Miata remains a very popular choice for its agility and price, the Z offers greater power and refinement.
Compared to the Subaru BRZ, the Z also excels in performance figures, while compared to the BMW Z4, it offers a more purist and direct approach, without the need for premium labels.
In simple words: the Nissan Z convincingly combines heritage, performance and value, something that the public has begun to notice.
The market shock and the Mustang case
Despite the success of the Z, there is still an undisputed leader in the segment: the Ford Mustang. The iconic American muscle car remains the country's best-selling sports car, even with a 14.2% drop in sales during the first half of 2025. 23,551 units were sold, a figure that is far from any other competitor.
The Mustang is still perceived as an "economical" option within the world of sports cars. With base versions starting at $30,000, its price-to-power ratio keeps it a popular choice among those seeking driving excitement without breaking the budget.
However, its focus and clientele are different. While the Mustang maintains its American essence, the Nissan Z appeals to an audience that values ????Japanese precision, sharp design, and the sporting heritage it has built since the 1970s.
A model that was on the verge of disappearing
It is not minor that the Z was at risk of being canceled. Following the end of the GTR due to its high production costs, and in the midst of a critical period for Nissan, rumors arose that the Z could also suffer the same fate.
Despite everything, current numbers have proven otherwise: the model is not only current, but is helping to raise the brand's overall figures.
Models such as the Nissan Versa,The most affordable sedan in the U.S. market, has also played a significant role in the recovery. With sales up 71% for the year and a base price of just $17,500, this vehicle has attracted young, practical buyers, generating volume for the brand. But the Z, without a doubt, is the symbol of renewed prestige.
