Onix SUV: Chevrolet already shows its future compact
In 2026, Chevrolet will launch a new SUV derived from the successful Onix, manufactured in Brazil and aimed at the entry-level segment
Chevrolet begins a new stage in its model offensive for Latin America: the Onix SUV, exhibited in an official preview during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the GravataA plant in Brazil.
Although the images are dark, robust lines, greater ground clearance and black moldings can be seen that enhance its presence compared to the Onix sedan and hatchback.
This bet is part of an ambitious plan: GM will invest up to 7 billion reais in Brazil until 2028, of which 1.2 billion will go to this plant to update the Onix and launch the derived model.
Internally named Project Carbon, this SUV aims at the heart of the B-SUV segment, seeking to compete directly with the Fiat Pulse, Renault Kardian and Volkswagen Tera.
Promising exterior design and a high-tech and safe interior
Although still covered, the Onix SUV allows us to anticipate a more adventurous aesthetic than its hatchback brother: raised hood, robust bumper, roof bars and redesigned C-pillar to give a more muscular and practical profile.
The visual language follows the style of recent Chevrolet launches in the region, sharing features with the new Tracker 2026 and the renewal of the traditional Onix: large grille, divided headlights with LED signature and a rear paint with a luminous strip that connects the optical groups to the central logo.
The interior will be an evolution compared to the current Onix. The adoption of a fully digital panel with instrumentation integrated into the multimedia center is expected, following the example of the new Spin and S10 in Brazil.
Improvements in connectivity and safety are also anticipated: autonomous braking, blind spot and collision alerts, in addition to systems such as OnStar, Wi-Fi hotspot and proximity key, already present in the latest versions of the 2026 Onix.
Family platform, familiar performance
The Onix SUV will share the global GEM platform, along with the Onix, Onix Plus, Tracker and Montana. A wheelbase of 2.55 meters is estimated, which positions it as a compact option with urban use efficiency.
The engine would come from the well-known 1.0 turbo three-cylinder with direct injection, capable of producing up to 115 horsepower and 179 Nm of torque, associated with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
In addition, there is talk of entry-level versions with a 1.0 naturally aspirated engine of 82 hp, to adjust to more accessible prices.
Local launch and production
The debut is scheduled for 2026, initially in Brazil and followed by an expansion to other markets in the Mercosur. Production will take place at the Gravataí plant, where the Onix and Onix Plus are already assembled.
After a period of production adjustments in 2025, the plant resumed operations with two shifts on July 22, seeking to increase the production volume of the renewed Onix.
The Onix SUV is not intended to be just "another" member of the Chevrolet family. Its combination of robust design, advanced technology, and local production positions it to lead the most dynamic segment of the Latin American market.
It will compete directly with models such as the Fiat Pulse, Renault Kardian, and the emerging Volkswagen Tera, reflecting Chevrolet's strategy of offering an affordable, modern, and future-proof SUV.
