Tesla bets on Samsung to manufacture its new chips
Tesla chose Samsung as a key partner to manufacture its new AI6 chips, essential for autonomous driving and future technological developments
Tesla and Samsung have signed a strategic agreement that could change many things in the automotive world today.
The electric car manufacturer led by Elon Musk chose Samsung to produce its next generation of artificial intelligence chips, known as AI6.
This alliance not only represents an investment of $ 16.5 billion dollars, but also boosts Samsung's position against its rivals in the logic chip sector.
Although the agreement was initially announced without mentioning Tesla, it was Musk himself who confirmed the link on the social network X, describing the collaboration as of undeniable strategic importance.
Production in Texas and a commitment to autonomy
The chips will be manufactured at the Samsung plant located in Taylor, Texas, from July 2025 until the end of 2033. This factory, which had had a slow start without high-profile clients, now takes a leading role with this order from Tesla.
Samsung will be in charge of manufacturing the AI6 chip, which will be part of Tesla's most advanced systems. This new component would be destined to be integrated into its Hardware 6 suite, which powers fully autonomous driving capabilities, and could also be used in developments such as the Optimus humanoid robot.
For now, Samsung already produces the AI4 chip for Tesla, while the AI5 is being manufactured by TSMC, first in Taiwan and then in Arizona. The transition to AI6 by Samsung marks a significant shift for Tesla in its supply chain strategy.
Financial impact and market reaction
After learning the news, Samsung shares soared between 6% and 6.8% on the Seoul Stock Exchange. The market reacted enthusiastically to the possibility that the deal could help mitigate the large losses suffered by Samsung Foundry's semiconductor division. In the first half of 2025 alone, this unit accumulated more than $3.6 billion in losses.
This contract represents the largest in Samsung Foundry's history, consolidating its commitment to manufacturing cutting-edge chips. In particular, these are chips with 2-nanometer technology, a field where the South Korean firm is seeking to gain ground against the dominance of TSMC, its main competitor in this area.
A forward-looking agreement
Elon Musk was quick to highlight his personal involvement in this project. In his own words: I will personally walk the line to accelerate the pace of advancements, and Samsung has agreed to allow Tesla to help optimize manufacturing efficiency.
He also emphatically stated that the $16.5 billion amount is only the minimum anticipated, leaving the door open for the final investment to be significantly higher.
Such statements reinforce Musk™s narrative of direct control over the most critical aspects of Tesla™s technological development.
In turn, the strategy appears to be geared toward diversifying key component suppliers, reducing dependence on TSMC, and strengthening vertical control of the value chain.
