First $1,000 Social Security payment of 2026 is moved up to 2025: who receives it...
There is a Social Security payment due in 2026, and its deposit will be moved up to December 2025. We tell you what benefit it is and who it's for
The end of 2025 will bring important news for millions of people who depend on Social Security. Although the payment is due in January 2026, it will arrive before the end of the year. This adjustment often causes confusion, but it has a simple explanation related to the federal calendar and holidays. The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirms that a payment will be sent to nearly 7.5 million beneficiaries in the United States on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. This money corresponds to the Supplemental Security Income program, known as SSI, and is part of the monthly payment for January 2026. The reason for the advance is the New Year's holiday. Normally, SSI is paid on the first day of each month. However, January 1 is a federal holiday. When this occurs, the SSA advances the deposit to the previous business day. In this case, that day is December 31, so the payment is issued before the end of the year. The SSI program is aimed at people with limited incomes. It primarily benefits adults over 65 and people with disabilities. According to official figures, approximately 7.39 million people receive this financial support nationwide. Unlike other Social Security benefits, SSI does not depend on having worked or paid taxes to the system. It is a program based solely on financial need. Therefore, many people who do not qualify for retirement or SSDI can receive this type of assistance. The advance payment on December 31 will be special for another reason. It will include the 2.8% increase approved for 2026 as part of the annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as COLA. This increase was announced by the SSA in October and will apply to several programs. With the new adjustment, the maximum monthly SSI amount for an individual increases from $967 to $994. For eligible couples, the maximum monthly payment increases from $1,450 to $1,491. These amounts may vary depending on personal circumstances and other income.
Some beneficiaries may receive a larger amount. This occurs in certain states that offer supplemental payments in addition to the federal SSI. Availability depends on where you live and current state rules. The SSA recommends checking its official website to see if any additional supplements apply.
Not all Social Security beneficiaries will receive money in December. Those receiving retirement, SSDI, or survivor benefits will receive their January payment at later dates. Most will receive it in the second, third, or fourth week of January, depending on their date of birth.
People who started receiving benefits before May 1997 follow a different schedule. In their case, the January payment will be issued on Friday, January 2, regardless of their birth date.
Those who receive both SSI and regular Social Security will see two separate deposits. The SSI will arrive on December 31. The other benefit will be paid on January 2.
