Honda decided to slow down the pace in one of the most important moments for the automotive industry. While several brands accelerate their plans electric and announce new generations of vehicles every few years, the Japanese manufacturer opted for a completely different strategy.

The company will keep some of its best-known models for longer and will delay several redesigns that were planned for this decade.

The measure directly affects very important vehicles for the brand, including the Honda Accord and the Odyssey minivan. It will also impact different Acura models and other products that will continue to use their current platforms for a time than expected.

The reason behind this decision is related to the huge costs associated with electrification and to a clear need to reorganize investments.

Honda is betting to extend the life of its models

According to reports emerging from the brand's supplier chain, Honda seeks to maximize the performance of its current vehicles while adjusting internal expenses and recovering financial stability.

The Japanese manufacturer made heavy investments related to the development of electric vehicles, although the commercial results did not end up being so positive ives as the company expected. The reports point to losses close to $15,800 million dollars, a situation that forced to rethink several strategic decisions.

For that reason, Honda preferred to delay the arrival of new generations and focus on gradually updating the models that already-has-on-the-market.

The future of the Accord will be hybrid

One of the most striking cases is that of Honda Accord. The midsize sedan will continue with its current generation for several years and, according to the leaked information, there wouldn't even be a completely new replacement with an exclusively gasoline engine.

Everything indicates that Honda intends to transform the Accord into a primarily hybrid model by the beginning of the next decade.

Far from representing bad news, many customers could see this decision with good eyes. The current Accord maintains a solid reputation in reliability, comfort and efficiency, factors that remain key within the segment.

Furthermore, extending the useful life of the model will allow Honda to continue incorporating technological improvements without assuming the enormous cost of developing a totally new platform.

The Odyssey will live on

The situation of the Honda Odyssey also generated surprise. At sometime, there was even talk of a possible temporary exit from the market due to the strong competition represented by models such as the Toyota Sienna and the Kia Carnival.

However, Honda decided to keep the minivan active and is already working on a future hybrid evolution.

The next generation of the Odyssey would arrive around 2030 and incorporate an electrified system based on a V6 engine. There are also rumours about the possible arrival of integral traction AWD, something that would allow to compete better against other family minivans. Part of that technology could end up being shared with the Honda Pilot.

Acura and HR-V also changed calendar

The strategy doesn't affect only Honda's most popular models. The HR-V will also see its complete redesign delayed until approximately 2032.

In Acura, the situation is quite similar. The MDX will remain longer with the current generation and its replacement would arrive only around 2031. The Integra, for its part, will extend its lifecycle by at least an three additional years.

Meanwhile, Honda will continue to make small updates focused on multimedia systems, efficiency, safety, and connectivity.
