While a decade ago cars like the BYD While the Dolphin Surf was proof of affordability, today BYD's Yangwang division dares to compete in a segment where price and technology are key. Its new model, the Yangwang U8L, raises the bar, combining extreme power, luxury, and hybrid autonomy.

At first glance, the U8L impresses with its size: 5.4 meters long and 3.25 meters between wheels, even surpassing many everyday vans. But beyond its dimensions, its propulsion system and technology place it among the most advanced cars in the world. BYD has integrated everything necessary to offer comfort, performance and a level of autonomous driving rarely seen before.
Unbelievable power and performance
The heart of the U8L combines a 2-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine with four electric motors, one per wheel, delivering a total of 1,180 horsepower and 1,520 Nm of torque.
This configuration allows a vehicle weighing more than 3.5 tons to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, an impressive figure for an SUV of its size.
Despite its size, the U8L handles urban environments with ease thanks to a turning radius of 5.45 meters, which facilitates maneuvers in tight spaces.
The DiSus P+ air suspension ensures stability and comfort, automatically adapting to different road conditions and improving dynamic behavior in curves and acceleration strong.
Technology and luxury at the highest level
The Yangwang U8L doesn't just stand out for its brute force. Its interior and technological system are designed to offer an unparalleled luxury experience.
It includes the most comprehensive version of the 'God's Eye' autonomous driving package, capable of assisting in multiple scenarios and significantly reducing the driver's load.
The finishes combine high-quality materials with modern design details, while the seating and interior space layout are designed to maximize comfort even on long journeys. Every detail, from the central screen to the climate controls, has been conceived to reinforce the feeling of exclusivity.
Hybrid autonomy and efficiency
The U8L has a 55.5 kWh LFP battery that allows it to travel 200 kilometers in fully electric mode. For longer journeys, the gasoline engine and 90-liter tank allow for a combined range of 1,160 kilometers – a remarkable figure for a luxury hybrid SUV.
This extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) combines the best of both worlds: zero emissions for urban driving and freedom of action on long journeys without the worry of frequent recharging.
The combination of battery and electric motors also ensures optimal torque distribution to each wheel, improving traction, stability, and the vehicle’s off-road capability, even on rough terrain.
Yangwang U8L Pricing and Availability
BYD has priced this behemoth at 1.28 million yuan, which is roughly equivalent to $180,000 USD. By European standards, this figure might seem more affordable compared to similarly sized and powerful luxury hybrid SUVs. The Yangwang U8L is now available at select dealerships in China, although due to its exclusivity, production is expected to be limited.
This price reflects not only the vehicle's power and size, but also its advanced autonomous driving technology, adaptive suspension, and premium finishes.
It's a clear message from BYD: China is ready to compete with European and American brands in high-end segments.
