Mazda confirms its first full hybrid for the new CX-5
The new Mazda CX-5 will be the first model with the brand's own hybrid system, a technology that will debut in 2027 together with the Skyactiv-Z engine
Mazda has already defined which vehicle will be in charge of opening a new stage for the brand. The next generation of its full hybrid system will officially arrive in 2027 and will feature the Mazda CX-5, one of the most important SUVs in its global portfolio.

In addition, this launch will mark the debut of the new Skyactiv-Z engine, a mechanism developed to respond to market demands and future environmental regulations.

The information was revealed by the Japanese media Creative Trend, which compiled statements from Koichi Yamaguchi, Mazda's product development manager, during an interview with the Australian media Drive. With this, the company cleared up several doubts about the direction of its electrification strategy.
Although full hybrids have been gaining ground in different markets for years, Mazda decided to take a different path. Instead of adapting an existing solution, the firm chose to develop its own technology to retain the driving characteristics that have distinguished its vehicles.
As Yamaguchi explained, engineers evaluated hybrid systems from other manufacturers and detected a response to the accelerator that did not meet the brand's expectations. That was one of the main reasons for starting the development of a completely new set.
The CX-5 will open a new stage
The new generation of the Mazda CX-5 was presented worldwide in July 2025. Its marketing began that same year in Europe and was later extended to the United States and Japan.
In the case of Colombia, the SUV is scheduled to arrive in September 2026 with a mild hybrid system, the same one that is already sold in some markets. Later, when Mazda has its new technology ready, the CX-5 will incorporate the long-awaited full hybrid system.
Currently, the brand offers electrified alternatives such as the mild hybrids of the Mazda3 and CX-30, in addition to the CX-60 plug-in hybrid. However, it still does not have a complete hybrid developed by itself.
More efficiency without losing the Mazda character
The objective of this project goes far beyond reducing fuel consumption. Mazda seeks to take advantage of the assistance of the electric motor to improve response at low revolutions, a point where combustion engines present greater limitations.
With this combination, the brand aims to offer more immediate acceleration and a driving experience that maintains the connection between the driver and the vehicle, a philosophy that it has defended for years in the development of its cars.
Prepared for new environmental standards
The new Skyactiv-Z engine was also designed to respond to environmental standards that will come into force in the coming years. According to Creative Trend, this mechanism was designed to comply with the Euro 7 regulations in Europe and with the Tier 4 requirements of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Mazda had already warned that adapting its current engines to these regulations could represent losses of up to 30% in available power.
With the new generation of engines and its own hybrid system, the company hopes to maintain a balance between efficiency, performance and driving sensations, an aspect that it considers essential to remain competitive against other manufacturers.
