“Obsession” is crowned the most successful horror film of the 21st century
With $426,000,000 worldwide, production reached figures unsurpassed since 2000, according to Box Office Mojo
Horror cinema has a new reference. And “Obsession” has established itself as the highest-grossing original film of the 21st century, after reaching record figures at the global box office.
According to figures listed by the specialized site Box Office Mojo, the production managed to raise $426.7 million dollars worldwide, a number that places it above any other original horror film released so far in 2000.
This is how “Obsession”, directed by Zach Cregger, managed to surpass titles of great impact in the 21st century, including: “Signs”, which obtained $408.2 million dollars, and the Oscar winner, “Sinners”, with $370.9 million dollars.
It is important to clarify that although there are other horror films released in this period that record figures higher than those of “Obsession”, these correspond to adaptations or sequels. Some of these are: “It”, “I Am Legend” and “World War Z”.
The almost $426,000,000 raised by this film placed it in tenth place among the highest-grossing horror films of all time. This ranking places it below “The Exorcist”, which registered $430.8 million dollars during its theatrical run in December 1973.
The feat becomes more relevant because the feature film was made with a budget of $750,000.
The success of the film “Obsession” is not only attributed to its interesting plot and production quality, but also to the great cast that makes it up. The list includes: Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Cary Christopher and June Diane Raphael, among others.
After its success in movie theaters around the world, the film will make its grand debut on the Peacock streaming platform on July 17 in the United States. In Latin America, it will be available on Universal starting July 24, 2026.
