The WRC returns to the United States after four decades
The FIA ??has already defined an event in 2026 as a preliminary step to validate the venue and consolidate its expansion in one of the most influential markets in motorsport
The geography of international motorsport will once again include the United States as a stage for the highest level of rallying. The World Rally Championship (WRC) officially confirmed that the United States will host a round of the championship starting in the 2027 season, marking the end of an absence that stretched back to the late 1980s.

The decision is not solely based on nostalgia. Behind the announcement are several years of market research, negotiations with local promoters, and an in-depth analysis of the sporting and commercial potential offered by the United States.

For the FIA ??and the championship organizers, this is a strategic move aimed at strengthening the WRC's global reach in a context of increasing competition among international categories.
The last time the championship visited the United States was in 1988, when the Olympus Rally was part of the official calendar. Since then, the championship has focused its expansion on Europe, Asia, and Oceania, leaving its return to a key region pending, both for its automotive industry and its enormous motorsport fan base.
A Candidate Event as a Decisive Test
Before the return is formally confirmed, the WRC will organize an evaluation event in 2026. This event, known as a “candidate rally,” will be crucial in confirming that the United States meets the technical, logistical, and sporting requirements demanded by the FIA.
The competition will take place between June 11 and 17 on stages located in the states of Tennessee and Kentucky. Fundamental aspects such as route safety, road quality, infrastructure for the teams, the service park, timing systems, and emergency response capabilities will be tested. The local organization will be handled by the Automobile Competition Committee for the United States (ACCUS) along with Podium Event Partners, who will act as direct liaisons with the international delegates. The latter will be responsible for preparing a comprehensive technical report that will determine whether the project receives final homologation to join the official calendar in 2027. Beyond the sporting outcome, the event will also serve as a barometer to gauge local public interest and the commercial appeal of rallying in a country accustomed to major spectacles like NASCAR, IndyCar, and Formula 1. A market the WRC doesn't want to lose again. For the FIA, the United States represents one of the territories with the greatest growth potential for the championship. Not only because of its economic size, but also because of the influence it exerts on consumer trends, sponsorship, and technological development within the automotive sector.
The return of the WRC will allow manufacturers to showcase their vehicles and technical solutions to millions of potential customers in an environment very different from traditional circuits.
The gravel and tarmac stages, the natural landscapes, and the mechanical demands of rallying offer an attractive narrative for brands interested in associating their image with endurance, innovation, and extreme performance.
Furthermore, the championship's presence could boost commercial agreements with new regional sponsors, television networks, and digital platforms interested in expanding their international sports offerings.
Manufacturers, Promoters, and a New Commercial Era
The confirmation of the American project coincides with a period of internal restructuring within the WRC itself. The FIA ??is reviewing the championship's promotional model, aiming to ensure more stable and attractive management for teams and brands.
In this context, manufacturers like Ford emerge as key players. The American brand, historically linked to rallying through M-Sport, would welcome competing at home in a World Rally Championship event, reinforcing its local visibility and its connection with the North American public. For other companies, the new event could also become an ideal platform to launch products, hybrid technologies, or mobility solutions that will later be incorporated into road cars. The growth of rallying in the United States: The return of the WRC is not happening in a vacuum. In recent years, rallying has gained ground in the United States thanks to the strengthening of the American Rally Association (ARA).The national championship has attracted manufacturers like Toyota Gazoo Racing and consolidated an increasingly professional sporting structure. This development has allowed for the training of drivers, technical teams, and organizers with sufficient experience to collaborate with a world-class competition. Added to this is the growing interest of young people in international categories, driven by the media exposure Formula 1 has received with several races held in the United States. The WRC seeks to capitalize on this favorable scenario to position itself as a different alternative within the spectrum of motorsport: a discipline closer to natural terrain, with open courses and a format that combines speed, navigation, and mechanical endurance.
