Volkswagen ID. Unyx 08: the SUV you won't see in the US
Volkswagen seeks to reinvent itself in the Chinese market with the ID. Unyx 08, a 100% electric SUV developed in conjunction with the local brand Xpeng
Volkswagen has always been synonymous with global success. However, the landscape in China—its largest market—has changed drastically. Local brands, especially those focused on electric vehicles, have gained ground, forcing the German giant to rethink its strategy.

Competition with manufacturers like BYD, NIO, and Xpeng has put European manufacturers, accustomed to dominating the market with traditional models, in a bind. In response, the Volkswagen Group decided to adopt a more “Chinese” approach, establishing strategic alliances with local partners to adapt to the tastes and expectations of that audience.

From that need emerged the Volkswagen ID. Unyx 08, an electric SUV developed in conjunction with Xpeng, one of the most technologically advanced and disruptive brands in the country. The vehicle was initially shown as the ID. The Evo Concept is now arriving in production, ready to debut in the first half of 2026.
An SUV designed for Chinese tastes
The ID. Unyx 08 breaks with Volkswagen's traditional style. Its silhouette combines elegance and modernity, with balanced proportions and smooth lines that give it a refined appearance. At first glance, it could be mistaken for a model from a completely new brand if it didn't bear the VW emblem on the front.
The design is distinguished by a closed grille, large side air intakes, and a set of slim LED lights connected by a light bar that runs the length of the hood. High-performance Brembo brakes and side air intakes add a sporty touch, while black details on the body accentuate its technological character.
At the rear, the design maintains minimalist elegance. An integrated roof spoiler and a continuous LED strip give it a futuristic look, complemented by slim taillights and electronically deployable door handles.
Dimensions and interior space
The new ID.The Unyx 08 has an imposing size, measuring 196.9 inches long with a 119.2-inch wheelbase. It's slightly larger than the Volkswagen Touareg and a bit more compact than the Atlas, placing it in an ideal middle ground for the large SUV segment. Among its most striking features is a darkened panoramic roof that covers both rows of seats and enhances the feeling of spaciousness. The door frames, in the same dark shade as the glass, contribute to a sleek and continuous look. As for the interior, although Volkswagen hasn't yet released official photos, a minimalist cabin is expected with floating screens, high-quality finishes, and a design focused on the digital experience, following the trend of the brand's most recent electric models. Electric Technology and Power: One of the most interesting aspects of the ID. Unyx 08 lies beneath its body. This SUV uses a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL, with a capacity that allows it to achieve a range of over 435 miles per charge. It also features an 800-volt fast-charging system, which significantly reduces charging times. Power is distributed between two electric motors, one on each axle. The rear motor generates 308 horsepower, while the front motor contributes 188 horsepower, achieving a combined output of 496 horsepower with all-wheel drive. With this configuration, the ID. Unyx 08 promises agile, stable, and quiet driving, in line with the demands of the Chinese market for high-performance electric vehicles. Why won't it come to America? Although the ID. Unyx 08 has all the potential to succeed in other markets, Volkswagen does not plan to sell it outside of China. The decision responds to both strategic and logistical considerations: the model was designed exclusively for the preferences and needs of the Chinese public, and is manufactured entirely in that country. In the United States and Latin America, the brand will continue to focus on its global lines, such as the ID.4 and ID. Buzz, which are better suited to the standards and regulations of those markets.
