California governor says he will offer rebates of up to $3,500 for electric vehicle buyers
According to Gavin Newsom, the new law could boost a rebate program of up to $270 million for new buyers
This Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that is expected to promote a rebate program of up to $270 million for residents of the state who qualify as new buyers of electric vehicles.
According to the statement, this program could distribute up to $3,500 for new buyers at the end of this summer, although it is currently unknown which participating brands will be, according to the California Air Resources Board, the list is expected to be known in the middle of next month.
Newsom also indicated that this rebate will apply to new electric vehicles with prices reaching $50,000, as there will be a second additional rebate for used electric vehicles with costs up to $25,000.
The law is promoted with the purpose of reducing environmental pollution. "Donald Trump is doing everything he can to pollute our air and hand the clean car industry to China on a silver platter. California is stepping on the accelerator," the governor said in the statement.
For its part, the International Energy Agency highlighted in a report that for the next few years one in every four new vehicles purchased will be electric, and in California sales already reach up to 20%, with Tesla being the one with the highest sales with 50%.
Although this rebate program ended in California in 2023, allocating $1.49 billion in subsidies, and despite the fact that President Donald Trump signed a law last year that eliminated the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles, sales of electric vehicles have skyrocketed in the last quarter due in part to the rise in gasoline.
