Which states have the highest child care costs?
Nebraska ranks first with child care costs ranging from 13.6% to 10.7% of median couples' income
According to a study developed and published by the Urban Institute in March of this year, it indicated that a family in the United States with children would need approximately $145,000 annually to be considered economically secure, since the high cost of living puts pressure on family budgets, and among the largest household expenses is child care.
Although more than 60% of families with children have both parents employed, the cost of child care is one of the biggest financial burdens for Americans, highlights a study by the personal finance company WalletHub, which analyzed which states currently have the highest child care costs.
For Chip Lupo, analyst at WalletHub, “taking care of a child's needs costs a lot of money, and many parents face the dilemma of whether to give up a salary to care for their children during the first years or allocate a significant part of their income to daycare services.”
WalletHub analysts developed the report taking into account various aspects of the family and comparing the prices of different specialized centers; In this sense, these are the states where there are the highest expenditures on child care.
“Married parents who both work can spend up to 14% of their income on child care, while for single parents the expense can rise to a staggering 59%,” notes Lupo.
According to the report, in Nebraska, child care costs range from 13.6% to 10.7% of the average income of married couples. It is the state with the fifth most expensive family child care and the third most expensive child care centers. “Single parents in Nebraska spend between 32.2% and 41% of median income on child care, depending on the type of service,” said the analyst.
