The Agneepath scheme was announced for the recruitment of youth in the age group of 17 to 21½ years in the Navy and Air Force. Under this scheme, youth will be recruited on contract basis for the first four years. Under this, the soldiers who are recruited in the armies will be known as Agniveer.

Under Agneepath scheme, 25 per cent Agniveers from each batch will be offered regular service after completion of four years of service. For this, Agniveers will have to pass the test. After the announcement of the Agneepath scheme, the Ministry of Home Affairs had said that 10 per cent vacancies in central paramilitary forces and Assam Rifles would be reserved for ex-Agniveers.

The age limit for recruitment in paramilitary forces is 18-23 years. Under the Agneepath scheme, those joining the armed forces even at the maximum age limit of 21 years, up to the age of 30 years after four years of service in the Army or Air Force or Navy in case of the first batch and up to 28 years for subsequent batches Can be recruited by CISF.
