In a shocking case of cyber fraud, a woman in Lucknow was duped of approximately Rs 2.8 crores by scammers posing as officers from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The incident has raised alarms about the increasing sophistication of cyber crimes and the need for heightened public awareness.

Raveena Tyagi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central Lucknow, addressed the media on the matter, revealing the details of the scam and issuing a public warning. “On the complaint of the victim, a case has been registered in the cyber crime police station. She has been duped of about Rs 2.8 crores by threatening digital arrest. This fraud has been done by introducing themselves as officers of TRAI and CBI,” Tyagi stated.

The DCP further elaborated on the modus operandi of the fraudsters, who managed to convince the victim that she was under investigation by these government agencies. By leveraging fear and misinformation, the scammers coerced the victim into transferring a large sum of money under the pretext of avoiding a so-called “digital arrest,” a term that has no basis in legal or procedural reality.

Tyagi emphasized that such a concept as a “digital arrest” does not exist and urged the public to be cautious if they receive threatening calls from unknown numbers. “In this, a case has been registered immediately and further action will be taken soon. I want to appeal to the public that if you receive a call from any unknown number and such a threat is found, please inform the nearest police station. Any kind of digital arrest is not valid, such a thing does not happen, so please be aware and stay safe,” she cautioned.

The DCP’s statement highlights the importance of public vigilance and awareness in combating cyber crimes.
