A man died after a confrontation with Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) deputies this Sunday in a community northwest of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The family is questioning why the officers opened fire.
BSO reported the incident occurred around 5:35 p.m. in the 2500 block of 9th Court NW, following a report of a disturbance involving an armed individual.
When officers made contact with the man, a gunshot ensued. The man, who was carrying a firearm, died at the scene.
Video of the encounter
A cousin of the victim, Shakira McFadden, videotaped the confrontation. In the footage, the man can be seen leaving a home with a gun pointed at his own head.
“He’s against the wall with the gun to his head. He never pointed it at you. Why did the first bullet go through his head?” McFadden asked, adding that the front door of the house remained open and that there was no direct threat to the officers.
As is protocol in cases involving lethal use of force by police, the investigation has been handed over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
The names of the deceased man and the officer who fired the shots have not been released at this time.
