Couple charged with murdering bartender in Georgia and throwing his dismembered remains into lake
Douglas County authorities arrested a man and woman for the alleged murder of 37-year-old Jamal Rashad Parker
Two people were charged with murder in Georgia after being accused of killing a bartender and abandoning his dismembered remains in a lake, local authorities reported.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Mario Andre Barber, 46, and Brittany Amber Baker, 42, were arrested Monday for the alleged murder of Jamal Rashad Parker, 37.
The investigation began after Parker's human remains were found in May in the Dog River Reservoir, located about 50 kilometers from Atlanta.
The identity of the victim was confirmed through DNA tests, after his father contacted the authorities when he recognized tattoos that matched those of his son, according to local channel WSB-TV.
According to investigators, Parker was murdered inside a home in Douglasville where Baker lived. Late last month, agents were seen removing an electric saw and cleaning products from the property as part of the investigation into the case.
The victim's relationship with the accused is unknown.
The authorities have not specified whether the victim had a close relationship with the accused. However, a fundraising campaign created by family members indicates that Parker was allegedly attacked by people “he knew and trusted.”
Barber and Baker appeared in court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty. Both remain detained without bail.
"I want them to be punished. I don't even think a life sentence is enough," Charles Parker, the victim's father, told WSB-TV after the court hearing.
Authorities keep the investigation open and have not offered more details about the motive for the crime.
