Body found during search for missing young woman in Texas
The discovery occurred during the search for 19-year-old Camila Mendoza Olmos, missing since Christmas Eve
A body was found Tuesday afternoon in Bexar County, Texas, while authorities were searching for Camila Mendoza Olmos, a 19-year-old woman reported missing since December 24.
County Sheriff Javier Salazar reported at a press conference that the body was located in a field in tall grass, about 100 meters from the young woman's home, during a joint operation between sheriff's office agents and the FBI.
So far, the body has not been officially identified, and the county medical examiner will be responsible for determining both the identity and the cause and manner of death.
No clear indications of a crime
Salazar indicated that, for now, homicide is not suspected, although he has stressed that the investigation is and ongoing that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions.
A firearm was recovered near the site of the discovery, which had previously been considered an item of interest in the investigation. Authorities indicated that a weapon belonging to a relative of Mendoza Olmos had been reported missing, although it has not yet been confirmed whether it matches the one found at the scene. The sheriff added that there are indicators consistent with possible self-harm, as well as signs of suicidal ideation and undiagnosed depression, according to information gathered during the investigation. Recent disappearances raise concern. Mendoza Olmos's disappearance coincided with two other recent cases in the area. Sofia Gabriela Peters-Cobos, 14, was found alive, while Angelique Johnson, 17, remains missing. Authorities have reiterated that there is no confirmed connection between the cases so far, although they are maintaining active search efforts and requesting the community's assistance. The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the Clara Alert issued for Mendoza Olmos has been deactivated. But he asked anyone with relevant information to contact the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
