Navy veteran accused of planning shootings at Texas school and zoo
Joshua Finney, 38, was arrested after a high-speed police chase in Katy, Texas. A loaded gun was found in his vehicle.
A Marine veteran was arrested after allegedly threatening to open fire at a high school and zoo in Houston, Texas, after leading police on a high-speed chase, authorities said.
Joshua Finney, 38, was accused of sending messages to a relative on Facebook, where he allegedly planned to shoot up Morton Ranch High School in Katy and the Houston Zoo. The relative also said Finney sent photos of himself posing with guns, local news station ABC 13 reported. However, a spokesperson for the Katy Independent School District denied any active or prior threat against the school. “The information reported in that article is inaccurate,” the spokesperson said after confirming that the Harris County Sheriff's Office had ruled out any danger to the school community.
Crash with patrol cars and armed arrest
Law enforcement located Finney on Tuesday and, when they attempted to stop him, the suspect began a chase that lasted eight miles at speeds of up to 110 miles per hour.
According to a magistrate, Finney “drove on the shoulder, weaved between lanes, drove the wrong way and collided with two patrol cars and innocent motorists.”
When he was arrested, police found a loaded handgun with 39 rounds of ammunition inside his vehicle. Investigators also obtained video showing him driving near Morton Ranch High School before the arrest.
During a probable cause hearing Wednesday, Finney did not appear in court because he was being held in a mental health unit.
Police said he faces charges of harassment, evading police and illegal weapons possession due to his extensive criminal history.
The investigation continues, and bail was set at $10 million on Thursday.
