Woman died after being attacked by an alligator while swimming in a Florida river
Authorities captured two reptiles in the area and are keeping the investigation of the incident open.
A 31-year-old woman died after being attacked by an alligator while swimming in a river in Seminole County, Florida, state authorities reported.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the Econlockhatchee River, located north of Orlando, while the victim was on a walk with her partner and a friend.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the group decided to stop to enter the water, ABC News reported.
Attack occurred while group was swimming in shallow water
Authorities indicated that the three people were in an area approximately three feet deep when the attack occurred.
According to FWC spokesperson Chad Weber, the alligator bit the woman on both arms.
The official explained that it was the victim's partner who called the emergency service and tried to help her during the incident.
The woman was taken to receive medical attention, but died before reaching the hospital.
Authorities captured two alligators in the area
After the attack, specialized teams captured two alligators located in the area.
According to authorities, one measured approximately 12 feet and the other 13 feet, a length considered unusually large.
Major Jay Russell of the FWC called the incident a tragedy.
So far, authorities have not reported whether it has been determined which of the animals was directly involved in the attack.
