On June 5, Salvador Bastida, mayor of Tacambaro, known as “Chavo Bastida,” was shot and killed along with one of his bodyguards shortly before midnight as he arrived home. According to a statement issued by the authorities, the officer was wounded during the attack. He was assisted and taken to a hospital, but his death was later confirmed. Another crime of this type occurred on June 3, 2024, and the victim was Yolanda Sanchez, mayor of Cotija, who was shot to death a few meters from the municipal palace, while walking with her bodyguards on the streets of that Pueblo Magico (Magical Town). Nine months earlier, the mayor was kidnapped during a visit to Zapopan, Jalisco. On March 30, 2024, Guillermo Torres, the mayor of Churumuco, was murdered with four gunshots to the chest while eating tacos in the city of Morelia. According to reports, the oldest also died during transport to the hospital. The 39-year-old official took office in 2021 under the PRI banner,but in 2022 he joined the ranks of Morena.
