The murder of Carlos Manzo shook the inhabitants of Michoacan and the entire country, and revealed, once again, the climate of violence that exists in the state governed by Alfredo Ramirez Bedolla.

And it is that during the 4 years that the governor has been in office In Michoacan, a total of seven mayors have been assassinated while in office. The most recent case is the death of Carlos Manzo, which occurred on November 1st. He was known for his direct fight against organized crime, even patrolling the streets himself. The 40-year-old mayor was shot seven times in downtown Uruapan at approximately 8:10 pm during a Day of the Dead event. The assailant was killed by security forces, and two other people were arrested. A few months earlier, on June 17, Martha Laura Mendoza, mayor of Tepalcatepec, was murdered in front of her home in the Tierra Caliente region by a man who got out of a vehicle and approached her SUV, opening fire. Mendoza Mendoza was the sister-in-law of Juan Jose Farias, alias “El Abuelo” (The Grandfather), whom authorities say went from being a hitman for the now-defunct Los Valencia Cartel to leading self-defense groups, and is now the head of the Tepalcatepec Cartel. On June 5, Salvador Bastida, mayor of Tacambaro, known as “Chavo Bastida,” was shot and killed along with one of his bodyguards shortly before midnight as he arrived home. Another crime of this type occurred on June 3, 2024, and the victim was Yolanda Sanchez, mayor of Cotija, who was shot to death a few meters from the municipal palace, while walking with her bodyguards on the streets of that Pueblo Magico (Magical Town). The tragic list is completed by Cesar Valencia, mayor of Aguililla, murdered in March 2022 when he had only been in office for six months, and Enrique Velazquez, mayor of Contepec, whose lifeless body was found in February 2022.
