Authorities arrested a suspect for questioning in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of journalist Savannah Guthrie, after the FBI released new surveillance video from outside her home.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department, with the assistance of the FBI, arrested an individual for questioning in connection with the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, according to to officials who spoke to local media.
According to an official quoted by ABC, the individual was arrested at a location south of Tucson, and authorities are preparing to search a site associated with the suspect as part of the ongoing investigation.
The development in the case came after the release of the first surveillance images, which show a masked man approaching the front door of Guthrie's home, while investigators continued their search of the neighborhood.
This Monday was the deadline for the journalists' family to pay six million dollars in Bitcoin for her release, a demand made in a note sent to a local television station but without proof of life.
Guthrie was last seen by her family on the evening of Saturday, January 31, after having dinner at one of her daughters' homes. The garage door opened at 9:48 pm (4:48 am GMT Sunday) and closed two minutes later. Early Sunday morning, at approximately 1:47 am (8:47 am GMT), the doorbell camera at Guthrie's home disconnected. At 2:12 am local time (9:12 am GMT), software detected a person on the camera, but no video was available, Sheriff Nanos explained last week. At 2:28 am Tucson time (9:28 am GMT), Guthrie's pacemaker app showed that it had disconnected from her phone. The family learned of the woman's disappearance after receiving a report that she did not attend church Sunday morning, as she usually did, and immediately reported it to the authorities.
