Brad Pitt opens up about his fight against alcoholism: “I needed to wake up”
Brad Pitt shared, for the first time, about his struggle with alcohol after his divorce
Brad Pitt, one of the most recognized stars in Hollywood, opened his heart once again about his path to sobriety and the personal process he went through after years of fighting alcoholism. In an emotional conversation with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast, the actor shared how attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings was a turning point in his life.
“I was basically on my knees and very open. I was trying everything, everything that was thrown at me. It was a tough time. I needed a reset,” Pitt confessed, describing the emotional state he was in when he decided to seek help.
Pitt explained his trial
During the episode, which lasted more than two hours, Pitt and Shepard who met at an AA meeting spoke candidly about their respective battles with addiction. For Pitt, joining the group was intimidating at first. “I tend to be a little shy in any situation, but I quickly got used to it and it became something I liked. It was something I looked forward to,” the Oscar winner revealed.
The actor explained that it was thanks to a friend who felt safe enough to open up. And at that point in his life, he was ready. “I'm very stubborn, but when I get into trouble, I'm pretty good at taking responsibility… the key is what to do with it and how I fix it to make sure it doesn't happen again.”
Beyond his own process, Pitt found in the meetings a space where other men shared with honesty and vulnerability. "They were incredible men, sharing their experiences, their weaknesses, their setbacks, their desires, their pains... and with a lot of humor. It was a truly special experience," he recalled.
Pitt had previously spoken about his decision to quit drinking, particularly following his 2016 split from Angelina Jolie, an event he himself described as a wake-up call.
In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, he said, “I took things to the limit, so I took away the privilege of drinking.” Back then, He also mentioned the importance of finding a judgment-free environment, both from others and from oneself.
Brad Pitt's story, according to comments on social media, is a powerful reminder that vulnerability is not weakness, but the beginning of change. In addition to that, his testimony not only humanizes the film icon, it can also serve as an inspiration to others going through similar situations.
