Who is IAF Squadron Leader Verlyn Panwar?

In an interview given to Humans of Bombay, former IAF Squadron Leader Verlyn Panwar told that her father was posted in different cities. It was not easy for her to adjust in the new environment, but gradually her interest in army and serving the country started increasing. Every Sunday she would go running with her father. At that time, Papa used to tell her about his experiences in the army - seeing the excitement in his eyes, she too wanted to experience the same.

When Verlin Panwar was 12 years old, her father was posted in Dehradun. There she saw a passing out parade. Seeing the cadets marching proudly, her resolve became stronger than ever.After 12th, she decided to join NCC as part of the 11th Girls Battalion in Dehradun. Along with this, she was also doing graduation. She told that they used to march in the rain, stay in camps and compete among themselves for the best cadet.

Such a tough schedule along with graduation studies was quite tiring. It was also difficult to maintain a balance between NCC training and studies. During this time she won many awards. At the age of just 17, she got the title of Best Cadet in the National Level Camp. Then during graduation, she applied for jobs in both Army and Air Force. She gave exams for this and then joined the Air Force after a few weeks.

Verlin Panwar still gets emotional remembering the old days. She told in the interview that the day she got the army uniform and badge, she could not stop her emotions. She first called her father. Then her father gave her a very valuable advice, which she made the mantra of her life. Her father told her not to just wear her rank, but also earn it.. After this, Verlin did exactly that. She never gave up even in the most difficult times.

Former IAF Squadron Leader Verlin Panwar was appointed in the Fighter Controller branch after completing her training. In 2018, she was overseeing the Republic Day flypast at a frontline IAF base. Just before takeoff, she saw an unknown object coming from across the border. Acting swiftly, she ordered the Air Force plane to scramble. After this, the object was deactivated. She considers it one of the toughest decisions she has ever taken.

After serving in the Indian Air Force for 10 years, Verlin Panwar retired in 2018. It was not easy and at that time she had no idea what new turn her career would take now. Then she started working as a consultant in technical security in IPL and Bollywood films. Verlin Panwar is an inspiration for those young girls who believe in dreaming big and fulfilling them.
