Alejandro Sanz on the abuse accusations against Julio Iglesias: “I find it hard to believe”
The Spanish singer-songwriter called for prudence regarding the accusations against Iglesias, stressing the importance of waiting for a court ruling
In the context of the premiere of his new documentary series, When No One Sees Me, Alejandro Sanz spoke out about the recent controversy surrounding Julio Iglesias. The singer of “Corazon Partio” showed caution and support for his colleague, following accusations of sexual assault made by two former domestic workers of the veteran artist. In an interview with Europa Press, Sanz was emphatic in stating that, although he respects the legal process, his personal experience with Iglesias makes him doubt the allegations. “I know Julio, and I find it very hard to believe that he could try to abuse anyone,” he stated. However, the Madrid native insisted that “we have to wait and see what a judge says” and avoid hasty media judgments. The artist stressed that, while it is essential to protect women from any abuse through strict legal mechanisms, it is also vital to defend the presumption of innocence. Sanz, who last year was accused of emotional manipulation by a fan, described as “terrible” the reputational damage that unproven accusations can cause. “We don't have anything to form a definitive opinion,” he added.
Legal Status of the Case
Sanz's statements coincide with the decision by the Spanish National Court Prosecutor's Office to close the proceedings against Julio Iglesias.
The Public Prosecutor determined a “lack of competence” and jurisdiction, since the alleged events occurred in the Caribbean and the victims do not reside in Spain.
Although the dismissal is not subject to appeal, the Prosecutor's Office informed the plaintiffs that they can refile their complaint with the judicial bodies of the countries where the alleged events took place.
For now, the case remains in legal limbo in Spain, while figures like Sanz call for calm and respect for due process.
