The Donkey from “Shrek” will have his own movie: this is what you should know
Eddie Murphy is the voice behind “Donkey”, the well-known character from “Shrek”, whose story will reach movie theaters
The famous and talkative Donkey from the “Shrek” saga, an iconic character voiced by Eddie Murphy, will star in his own solo adventure. Universal Pictures confirmed that the film, titled simply Donkey, will hit theaters on June 30, 2028.
“Donkey” will be a prequel that will explore the origins of the beloved character. According to the official synopsis, the film will tell the story of “how a donkey became a Donkey.” The adventure will transport the audience to the well-known land “far, far away” to discover the roots of this adventurer.
Actor Eddie Murphy will reprise his role as the voice of Donkey, a character he has played since the release of the first Shrek film in 2001. Murphy had already shown his enthusiasm for the project in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter:
"I've always said that I would do Shrek forever. Donkey is a great character. I love the whole cast. So I was excited when they told me, 'Hey, they're going to make another movie,' and that they also want to make a Donkey movie. I'm in!"
The film will be directed by Charlie Bean, known for his work on “LEGO Ninjago.” He will be accompanied as co-director by Matt Flynn, who has worked on other DreamWorks productions. The production is carried out by Rebecca Huntley.
A franchise in full expansion
The premiere of “Donkey” in 2028 will occur exactly one year after the release of “Shrek 5”, scheduled for June 30, 2027. The fifth installment will feature the return of the original leading trio: Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona and Eddie Murphy himself as Donkey. In addition, actress Zendaya will join the cast, who will voice Felicia, one of Shrek and Fiona's daughters.
La franquicia “Shrek” ha demostrado ser un éxito rotundo en taquilla. The four main “Puss in Boots” films and two spin-offs have collectively grossed more than $3.5 billion. The first film, released in 2001, was also the winner of the first Oscar for Best Animated Film.
