Antonio Banderas clarified rumors about being bankrupt
The actor issued a statement to clarify the financial situation of the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank and ensure that his personal finances are in perfect order.
After several days of making headlines in the Spanish media due to an alleged financial bankruptcy, Antonio Banderas decided to break his silence.
The famous actor of “The Mask of Zorro” categorically denied the versions that claimed that he was bankrupt due to the supposed million-dollar losses of his cultural project in his native Malaga.
The rumors gained strength after television programs and various publications speculated that the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, founded by the performer in 2019, was in the red with annual losses of more than 2.5 million euros (almost 3 million dollars), attributed to high maintenance and personnel costs.
Given the commotion, Banderas issued a direct statement in which he described it as “devastating” to have to give explanations again.
"The ruin of which I am made a victim in certain media does not exist. I am sorry for those who could find a certain pleasure in this being so," he stated firmly.
The actor clarified that the stage space operates privately and without profit, operating with the spirit of a public theater and without receiving state subsidies.
He also explained that his sole purpose is to seek artistic excellence and that he has the financial solvency to assume any deficit that large productions may generate. "If I had wanted to make money it would have been very easy. But I have preferred to do large productions, where I have given work to hundreds of people," he added.
Finally, the man from Malaga thanked his sponsors for their support and celebrated that last year they managed to attract almost 200,000 spectators. He concluded his message with optimism and humor ahead of his upcoming 65th birthday: "No, my friends, I'm not broke, I'm full! And I'm threateningly happy!"
