Billie Eilish lashes out at ICE and the Trump administration: 'We no longer feel safe'
The singer raised her voice after receiving the Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community Award for Environmental Justice last weekend in Atlanta
Singer Billie Eilish decided to join the wave of protests and raised her voice against the wave of immigration raids led by ICE across the country, criticizing the policies that the Donald Trump's administration has implemented since taking office.
It was during the ceremony in which she received the Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community Award for Environmental Justice that the "Bad Guy" singer included a few words about the sociopolitical situation in the United States in her acceptance speech.
After taking the stage at the King Center amidst applause from the audience, Billie Eilish took the microphone to express her discontent with the growing wave of incidents that have arisen as a result of ICE immigration raids.
"It's very strange that we're being celebrated for working for environmental justice at a time when it seems harder to achieve than ever, given the current state of our country and the world," the music star began.
With her characteristic outspokenness, she questioned the actions of the current administration: "We're seeing our neighbors kidnapped, peaceful protesters assaulted and murdered, and our civil rights being taken away, “They are cutting resources to combat the climate crisis because of fossil fuels and livestock farming that are destroying our planet, and access to food and healthcare is becoming a privilege for the rich instead of a fundamental human right for all Americans,” she stated. Eilish also lamented the direction the country and its leaders have chosen: "It's very clear that protecting our planet and our communities is not a priority for this administration. And it's very difficult to celebrate when we no longer feel safe in our homes or on our streets," she expressed. For this reason, she stated that she felt the need to join the citizens' protests in the most effective way she knows how: by using her voice. “I have this platform and I believe it's my responsibility to use it, so I feel like I'm just doing what anyone in my position should be doing,” Billie Eilish concluded.
