Jennifer Lopez remembered her Super Bowl show with Shakira: "I wanted mine"
The singer, who had already talked about the show in her documentary Halftime, said that she had always dreamed of having her own moment on stage
Jennifer Lopez remembered her iconic performance at the 2020 Super Bowl with Shakira and expressed her version of the discontent that caused her to do the joint show.
In a recent interview on the Howard Stern Show, JLo explained that although she agreed to participate in the show with For Shakira, she had always dreamed of having her own moment on stage like her idols Madonna or Prince.
“It was always a dream of mine to do it (the Super Bowl halftime show). Like my idols, like Madonna, like Diana Ross or Prince… When they told me I was going to do it with Shakira or Gloria Estefan, I thought: 'Do you think a single Latin artist can't do it alone?' That was the problem,” explained the singer, who had previously spoken about the show in her documentary Halftime.
The singer pointed out that the production could have handled the show better, since both she and Shakira deserved a space to shine separately.
“Shakira also deserved her moment. And I wanted mine, the opportunity to do what I always dreamed of,” she said.
JLo confessed that she initially felt frustrated for not having the entire show time just for herself, and that the decision to share the show seemed at the time “the worst idea in the world.” However, over time, she acknowledged that being on that stage was the best thing that could have happened to her.
The singer highlighted the importance of the show at that time: two women, mothers and Latinas who championed hard work and brought light in difficult times.
In February 2020, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira starred in the Super Bowl halftime show, held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The show, lasting approximately 14 minutes, was divided into two main parts: one for Shakira and one for JLo.
In the show, the Barranquilla native performed some of her most iconic hits such as “She Wolf”, “Whenever, Wherever”, “Chantaje” and “Hips Don't Lie”.
When her turn came,Jennifer Lopez took the stage to perform iconic songs like "Jenny from the Block," "On the Floor," and "Waiting for Tonight." The show culminated with JLo and Shakira singing "Let's Get Loud" together. Jennifer Lopez expressed her pride in that performance and the message both Latin artists conveyed to the world, despite the logistical difficulties and their personal desires.
