The Assam government has now prepared a new scheme for drunken policemen. Under this, habitual drunken police personnel and officers will be offered voluntary retirement by the government. This was announced by the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma himself. He said that habitual drunkard policemen will be given VRS and the process of new recruitment has also been started in their place.

Significantly, the Chief Minister of Assam has also kept the Home Ministry with himself. He said that around 300 officers and jawans are habitual alcoholics whose bodies have been damaged by excessive alcohol. The government has come up with a proposal for VRS for them. The CM is on a mission to implement this change in administration before the Sarma government completes two years in Assam on May 10. In this episode, Sarma has announced about this change.

The Assam CM said that such VRS offer to policemen exists in some other states as well. However, this is being done for the first time in Assam. "It is an old rule, but we did not implement it earlier," he said. He said that even after taking VRS, these habitual drunkard jawans will continue to get full salary, only a new jawan will take their place.

Earlier on Thursday, in a conversation with senior state officials, Sarma had directed them to weed out unnecessary people from the police force and give space to only physically fit people. Sarma had said that those who are habitual drunkards or extremely obese or who have several corruption cases against them, should be removed from the force by giving them either VRS or CRS compensation.
