Mopa International Airport inaugurated
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mopa International Airport in Goa. During this, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia were present with him. This airport will be named after former Chief Minister of Goa and late BJP leader Manohar Parrikar. Its foundation stone was laid by him in November 2016. This will be the second airport in Goa, the first one being located in Dabolim.
During this, PM Modi said that in our country's approach towards infrastructure for decades, the governments gave more priority to the vote bank than the needs of the people. Because of this, thousands of crores of rupees were often spent on such projects which were not needed. For this reason, often where the basic infrastructure used to be necessary for the people, it was ignored.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this airport was planned when Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government was at the center. But after his government left, not much was done for this airport. This project was stuck for a long time. After 2014, we started all the processes fast and 6 years ago I came here and laid the foundation stone. After many hurdles, today this magnificent airport is ready.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this airport will definitely give a boost to tourism. Having 2 airports has increased the potential for Goa as a cargo hub as well. Prior to 2014, the attitude of the governments had established air travel as a luxury. Most of the rich people could take advantage of this. Earlier governments did not even think that common class and middle class also want to travel by air.
He said that's why the then governments avoided investing in faster means of transport. As a result, we were left behind in spite of such a huge potential associated with air travel. Now the country is moving forward with the thought of development, so we are seeing its results. Today India has become the third largest aviation market in the world. In the last 8 years, India has made every effort to improve the 'Ease of Travel' for tourists. We have enhanced visa on arrival and simplified the visa process.
