Madras HC: Uproar over making Victoria Gauri a judge, lawyers told connection with BJP, wrote letter to SC collegium
More than 50 lawyers of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court are openly opposing the appointment of Laxman Chandra Victoria Gauri as a judge.
Madras High Court lawyer Laxman Chandra is not taking the name to end the ruckus regarding the appointment of Victoria Gauri as a judge. More than 50 lawyers of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court are openly opposing this appointment. Of these, 58 lawyers have written to the Supreme Court Collegium asking them to reconsider their withdrawal. All the lawyers have said in the letter that despite expressing disagreement on Gauri's name, her name has been refused to be withdrawn by the collegium.
Victoria Gauri's past connection with BJP:
Lawyers said that Victoria Gauri has a political background who has also served as members of political parties. He says that Gauri has been the General Secretary of BJP's Mahila Morcha. Also, it has been said in the letter that such appointments can weaken the judiciary. Lawyers believe that Gauri's views are very different from constitutional values. He has lodged an objection regarding Gauri's religious bigotry. Also said that Gauri is unfit to be a High Court judge.
