The Supreme Court has directed various state governments to provide details within six weeks regarding their actions on cases involving alleged cow vigilantes and incidents of lynching. A bench comprising Justice BR Gavai, Justice Arvind Kumar, and Justice Sandeep Mehta decided to hear a petition filed by a women's organization after this stipulated period.

The plea sought directions for states to promptly act in accordance with a 2018 Supreme Court judgment aimed at addressing mob violence against Muslims by purported cow vigilantes. The bench emphasized that most states have not submitted their responses to the petition, which concerns instances of mob lynching. Therefore, the court granted a six-week timeframe for these states to file their counter affidavits.

The petition in question was filed by the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), an organization affiliated with the Communist Party of India (CPI). Last year, the Central Government and the Director Generals of Police of Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana were directed to provide responses to the petition.

During the proceedings, advocate Nizam Pasha, representing the petitioner organization, highlighted an incident of alleged mob lynching in Madhya Pradesh. He pointed out that despite this, the victims were charged with cow slaughter. Pasha questioned how the 2018 verdict in the Tehseen Poonawala case could be implemented if states denied the occurrence of mob lynching incidents.
