Michigan authorities are investigating the discovery of a newborn's body inside a portable toilet at the Electric Forest music festival, held over the weekend in the town of Rothbury.

The discovery occurred on Sunday morning during routine maintenance work on the portable toilet, when workers found the baby's body, reported Daily Mail.

Michigan State Police confirmed that the investigation remains open.

Authorities have not yet determined if there was a crime

In a statement, authorities described the child as a neonate, a term used for babies four weeks or younger.

The identity of the newborn and his exact age have not been revealed so far.

It has also not been established whether the death occurred due to criminal causes.

The police asked to avoid speculation on social networks while the investigations progress and noted that anyone with relevant information should contact local authorities.

Authorities have also not publicly identified the parents.

Festival brought together thousands of attendees over the weekend

The discovery occurred during the last day of Electric Forest, an event that has been held since 2011 and usually brings together tens of thousands of attendees at the Double JJ Resort complex.

According to the report, this year's edition brought together around 50,000 people.

The festival organization published a message on social networks in which they expressed their dismay at what happened.

Meanwhile, Sunday programming continued as planned, although some activities subsequently concluded earlier than expected due to forecast adverse weather conditions.

Authorities are keeping the investigation open and have not said when they might release new details.

For now, the case remains under review while information is gathered to determine the circumstances of the discovery.
