Democrats accuse Trump of using law enforcement to silence political adversaries

Days after that moment, the lawyer and former local prosecutor for Alameda County, said he is so worried about legal risks during Trump’s second term that he has purchased liability insurance to protect himself.
In a social media post last month, Swalwell accused the Trump administration of targeting Democratic lawmakers like his colleague, New Jersey Representative LaMonica McIver, who was accused of assaulting law enforcement officers at an immigration detention center.
Swalwell, who has not been charged with a crime, wrote on X : “A RED LINE has been crossed. Trump is prosecuting his political enemies in Congress. This is just the beginning. We must take everything we have done before to show dissent and take it to the next level.”
As an example, last week, Democratic Senator Alex Padilla of California was handcuffed and forcibly removed from a press conference by federal agents after publicly questioning the Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
The Padilla incident occurred weeks after the arrests of McIver and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, also a Democrat, following a May 9 confrontation with federal agents outside the Delaney Hall immigration center in Newark. Prosecutors dismissed the charge against Baraka, but McIver faces felony charges and the possibility of several years in prison if convicted.
Prosecutors allege McIver struck the agents with her arms during the incident. The Department of Homeland Security accused the elected officials of “breaking into” the detention center.
McIver responded to her accusation in a statement that said:“The facts of this case will prove that I was simply doing my job and will expose these proceedings for what they are: a blatant attempt at political intimidation.”
In the latest incident, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, a Democrat running for mayor, was detained by immigration agents Tuesday in a Manhattan courtroom.
In a videotaped sequence of events, Lander is seen restraining a man, whom he identified as Edgardo, after his immigration hearing. The video shows masked immigration agents attempting to detain the man and then arresting Lander when he requested a warrant. Federal law enforcement authorities said Lander was arrested “for assaulting law enforcement and obstructing a federal officer.” He was released four hours later, accompanied by his wife and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. Against that backdrop, Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Maryland Democrat and ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, accuses “strongarm tactics” to “silence and intimidate.” “Trump and his henchmen want to jail members of the legislative branch who are performing oversight functions,” Raskin told CBS News. “These strongarm tactics are meant to silence and intimidate people, but they only strengthen our conviction.”Raskin told CBS News: “These heavy-handed tactics are meant to silence and intimidate people, but they only strengthen our conviction.”Raskin told CBS News: “These heavy-handed tactics are meant to silence and intimidate people, but they only strengthen our conviction.”
