More than a hundred Democratic representatives refuse to provide millions in aid to Israel
103 House Democrats turned their backs on Israel by voting against the US giving it billions of dollars in aid
In an unprecedented vote in the House of Representatives, 103 Democrats voted in favor of an amendment proposed by Republican Representative Thomas Massie to block billions of dollars in military aid to Israel.
A Democrat joined the initiative, but in the final count the measure failed by accumulating 104 votes against and 314 in favor.
It should be noted that 98 Democrats voted against the proposal and 10 abstained.
In fact, Democratic divisiveness also manifested itself among the Democratic leaders of the House of Representatives.
While Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Leader; and Pete Aguilar, president of the House Democratic Caucus, supported the approach promoted by the conservative Massie with their vote; House Minority Whip Katherine Clark voted in favor.
The new position assumed by nearly half of the Democratic congressmen is notable, since two years ago only 37 Democrats dared to vote against providing financial support to the Israeli government.
One of the reasons for the distancing with the Jewish nation is the arrogance shown by Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, in refusing to respect the ceasefire agreements established by the current US administration.
Even though billions of dollars will continue to flow from the United States to Tel Aviv, the support of its greatest ally is no longer full.
"Think about this for a moment. As of today, the majority of Democrats in this building refused to vote in favor of sending billions of dollars in weapons to the Israeli military.
This sends a strong message to Netanyahu: gone are the days of a blank check with no accountability for his wars and war crimes, at least by the Democratic Party. “I think nothing will be the same on this issue after this vote,” Democratic Representative Greg Casar, leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said after the vote.
