Venezuela's Executive Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, was sworn in this Monday as the country's interim president, two days after the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Deputy Cilia Flores, by US forces in a military operation in Caracas.
The Chavista said that She attended the ceremony “with sorrow for the suffering inflicted on the people” of her country following what she described as “an illegitimate military aggression,” referring to the U.S. attacks during which Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured. Sworn in by her brother, the president of the National Assembly (AN, Parliament), the Chavista Jorge Rodriguez, the official—the first woman in Venezuelan history to head the Executive branch—assured that, in these “terrible hours of threats against stability,” she will not rest “for a single minute to guarantee peace.” Rodriguez also affirmed that she will not rest “to see Venezuela reach its rightful destiny and stand on the pedestal of historical honor that it deserves as a free, sovereign, and independent nation,” as well as to “guarantee a government that provides social happiness, political stability, and political security.” Delcy Rodriguez was summoned by the Supreme Court to serve as acting president of the country following the capture Maduro and Flores were arrested on January 3rd, accused of narcoterrorism and conspiracy.
