Political Round: Politicians, fans, and owners of the Dodgers play two sides

They claim to be friends of immigrants, but they applaud the team's principal owner who does business with ICE

The National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) has launched a petition asking the Los Angeles Dodgers not to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House.

But if they went to visit Trump this year, after last year's victory, what makes us think they wouldn't go this time, especially when their billionaire owner Mark Walter openly does business with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)?

Walter, the majority owner of the team and new owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, is also president of Guggenheim Partners, a financial firm that owns a 0.38% stake in GEO Group, the corporation that operates ICE detention centers; He also runs TWG Global, a company that recently announced an alliance with Palantir Technologies, a data analytics firm that ICE has paid $30 million to build a facial recognition platform and predictive algorithms to track immigrants and support the Trump Administration's deportation efforts. This information recently came to light and has prompted several pro-immigrant groups to ask the Dodgers' principal owner to distance himself from his business dealings with ICE, which is causing so much suffering and pain to the Latino community. But Mr. Walter, who, incidentally, led the Dodgers' victory parade through downtown Los Angeles, is playing both sides. In June, he donated one million dollars to the city of Los Angeles to be distributed to families affected by the raids; a sum he recovers in one fell swoop with his lucrative deals with ICE.

In other words, the tycoon profits from the torture and separation of immigrant families on one hand, and from the other, he gives charity to the families of those detained in the centers he co-owns.

What's striking is that no politician seems to care about the marriage between Walter and ICE. Mayor Karen Bass, Senator Maria Elena Durazo and Congressman Jimmy Gomez either know nothing about Walter's business dealings, or they turn a blind eye like many Mexican-American fans who call themselves Democrats but support immigrants. But let's return to the initial question: Will the Dodgers visit Trump, amidst the climate of fear in Los Angeles due to his administration's mass deportation campaign?

For many, that visit would mean giving a boost to his policies and a slap in the face to his immigrant fans.

Test passed

Governor Gavin Newsom passed a huge test with the overwhelming victory of Proposition 50, which authorizes the use of new congressional maps for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections.

This victory not only gives Democrats the possibility of taking control of the House of Representatives away from President Trump but also of halting his cruel and ruthless raids and social cuts to the most vulnerable; But it also puts Newsom a step closer to his ambitions to be president of the United States, and positions him as a courageous Democratic leader who delivers results.

Even though Republicans immediately sued, trying to prevent the maps from taking effect, Proposition 50 increased Newsom's political capital, and how.

Padilla's not running

Senator Alex Padilla chose the busy day of the special election to announce that he will not be running for governor of California next year, and will remain in the Senate. Although he never officially announced his candidacy, he had said he was considering it and would make the announcement after November 4; but he is making it public on election day itself, as if to avoid making too many waves.

For former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, it was excellent news, and he immediately showered the senator with praise on social media.

“Phew, one less,” Villaraigosa must have said after letting out a deep sigh of relief.

According to some political experts, Villaraigosa's main weakness, which explains why his efforts as a candidate haven't taken off, is that he hasn't been able to convince major donors to contribute to his campaign.
