Sheinbaum defends former Mexican prosecutor after revealing his millionaire assets
The Mexican president maintained that the fact that the former prosecutor has made his financial situation public shows that there is no opacity regarding his assets.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, defended this Friday the former attorney general and current ambassador of Mexico to the United Kingdom, Alejandro Gertz Manero, by stating that the multimillion-dollar assets that he made public in his asset declaration are transparent because it was reported in accordance with the law and explained its origin.
"The information comes from a declaration of his assets and he says that this assets comes from his family, from what he has acquired. So, he was transparent and declared his assets," said the president during her morning press conference.
Sheinbaum's statements occur after the wealth declaration of Gertz Manero, now a member of the Mexican Foreign Service as ambassador to the United Kingdom, was known this week.
In his statement he reported more than thirteen properties - including ten houses, a complete building, an apartment and a piece of land - as well as a jewelry collection valued at around one million dollars, works of art worth about $450,000, seven vehicles, including two Rolls-Royce, and bank accounts in Spain, Switzerland and the United States.
The Mexican leader maintained that the fact that the former prosecutor has made his financial situation public shows that there is no opacity regarding his assets.
"Well, it is his assets and he declared it. In other words, there is total transparency on his part. Regarding his assets, it would be bad if he had assets that he did not declare. So, well, it is assets that he declares and that he has," he stated.
He insisted that the official fulfilled the obligation to report the origin of his properties and assets.
"So, he makes it public, he declares it, he says how he acquired it. So, it is transparent," he reiterated.
The information was made public through the Declaranet platform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since the former prosecutor was required to present a public asset declaration upon assuming his new diplomatic position.
During his management at the head of the Attorney General's Office (FGR), between 2019 and 2025, Gertz Manero had kept this information confidential.
In the statement, the diplomat attributes the origin of a good part of his assets to family inheritances and acquisitions made over several decades, including a home in the exclusive Madrid neighborhood of Los Jerónimos and a property in the United States worth more than a million dollars.
Gertz Manero resigned from the Prosecutor's Office in November 2025 to assume the Mexican embassy in the United Kingdom, after a term marked by questions about the administration of justice and various public controversies.
