Trump announces that the Republican Party will hold a midterm convention in 2026
Democrats are also considering holding such a gathering before the November 2026 elections
Trump did not offer details about where the convention would be held or what would happen there, but highlighted several statistics that have been beneficial to the Republican Party this year.
The Republican Party is fighting to maintain control of the House and Senate in 2026.
“Republicans will be holding a Midterm Convention to showcase the great gains we have made since the 2024 Presidential Election,” Trump wrote in a post Tuesday.
“Date and location TBD. Stay tuned, it will be quite an event and very exciting!” he added.
Trump himself had previously suggested the idea in late August in a separate post on Truth in which he indicated that he would recommend the party to hold the event.
The Democratic Party also said in August that it is considering holding a convention before the 2026 midterm elections to introduce voters to new talent within the party.
Conventions typically take place every four years to formally nominate presidential candidates, but the possibility of dueling midterm caucuses demonstrates the weight both parties place on conventions. 2026 elections, which could determine whether Trump retains power in all three spheres of government in Washington, D.C.
President Trump's announcement also reflects the redistricting contest unfolding in Republican and Democratic states across the country, fueled by the Trump-backed push to have Texas redraw its maps to influence each party's dominance in Congress during the midterm elections.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the voter turnout rate for the 2022 congressional elections, where the Republican Party won control of the House of Representatives and Democrats retained the Senate, was lower than in the historic 2018 elections, but registered the highest voter registration rate in 30 years.
