USA Preparing for talks between Russia and Ukraine in Miami
President Zelensky reported that the Trump administration proposed face-to-face meetings between the warring countries to end the war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Washington has proposed the first face-to-face negotiations between Ukraine and Russia within six months, as diplomats meet in Miami to relaunch talks aimed at ending the war.
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev announced he was en route to the Florida city, where Ukrainian and European representatives are already gathered, along with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who are acting as mediators.
A joint meeting
Zelenskyy added that Washington “has proposed the following format: Ukraine-United States-Russia.” He added that European representatives could be present and that “it would be logical to hold such a joint meeting.” Witkoff and Kushner met near Miami with Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, and representatives from France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The participation of Russians and Europeans in these talks in Florida marks a step forward from the previous stage, in which the United States held separate negotiations with each side in different locations. A plan favorable to Russia: More than a month ago, the United States proposed a plan to end the war. The initial text, widely perceived by Ukraine and its European partners as favorable to the Kremlin’s demands, has since been revised following consultations with Kyiv. Details of the new version are not known, but according to Zelensky, it involves territorial concessions by Ukraine in exchange for Western security guarantees.
