Cooper Flagg admits that Bronny debut against the Lakers was one of the worst games of his life
The number one draft pick shines despite his mistakes in his debut with the Mavericks
Cooper Flagg's first game as a professional was far from perfect. The Dallas Mavericks rookie made his NBA Summer League debut against Bronny James' Lakers, in a game that ended in an 87-85 victory. But far from celebrating, Flagg was extremely self-critical.
“I would say it was one of the worst games of my life,” he confessed to reporters after the game. “But we won, and that's what really matters to me.”
Numbers That Don't Tell the Whole Story
Flagg finished with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block in 32 minutes. However, his shooting left much to be desired: he made just 5 of 21 shots and missed all five of his three-point attempts.
Debut anxiety, the pressure of being the No. 1 pick in the draft, and the high expectations placed on him may have played a role. "The coaches asked me to be aggressive, to try new things. I'm learning, too," the 19-year-old added.
Beyond the stats, Flagg showed moments of brilliance. His first basket was a stunning dunk, and in the final minutes he contributed a key assist and a decisive block that helped seal the victory.
Bronny James defended him and also praised him
On the other side of the court, Bronny James LeBron's are put in a restrained performance: eight points, two rebounds, and two assists in 21 minutes. He had to guard Flagg at various times during the game. In the end, he didn't hesitate to praise him: "He's an incredible player. He's going to be someone very special," he said.
The game generated a lot of attention, not only because of the last names involved, but because of the enormous expectation surrounding the future of both. Courtside tickets sold for as much as $2,500.
Next challenge: San Antonio Spurs
The action doesn't stop for Flagg. This Saturday, he'll return to the Mavericks roster against the Spurs, where he'll look to correct mistakes and regain confidence ahead of the rest of the Summer League.
