Former Serbian player Vlade Divac is stable after surgery for a motorcycle accident
Historic former NBA player Vlade Divac was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery after suffering a motorcycle accident on Thursday on the Lustica peninsula, south of the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, according to Serbian media reports on Friday.
Divac, 57, was riding his motorcycle along the coast Montenegrin when he suffered a fall that prevented him from getting up on his own.
The former player was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he underwent surgery to implant an artificial hip, according to Serbian media outlet Informer.
"During the day, he underwent surgery," said Ljubica Mitrovic, a spokesman for the hospital in the city of Risan. "He is in stable general and physical condition and is under close supervision of the medical staff."
Vlade Divac, a star career in Europe and the NBA
The 2.16-meter center, considered one of the best Serbian basketball players of all time, had a distinguished career in both Europe and the NBA.
He began his professional career with KK Partizan Belgrade and made the leap to the NBA in 1989, where he played 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Sacramento Kings, and the Charlotte Hornets.
During his time in the American league, Divac averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 1,134 games and was selected to play in an All-Star Game.
His legacy was recognized in 2019 when he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Beyond the court, Divac also left his mark on his country's sport, serving as president of the Serbian National Olympic Committee from 2009 to 2017.
The news of his accident has generated concern among fans and colleagues in the basketball world. No further details have been released about his current condition at this time, but the operation was reportedly successful.
