Anthony Martial and his dark beginning in Mexican football
The French striker did not have a good experience in his first tournament in Mexico. Learn about Anthony Martial's record
Anthony Martial arrived in Mexican football with impressive credentials. The former Manchester United striker did not have a good start in Liga MX. Rayados de Monterrey were unable to capitalize on Martial's experience in his first season.
Rayados de Monterrey made a splash in the transfer market by signing a player of Anthony Martial's caliber. The Monterrey team had the luxury of having on the field a striker who scored goals for Monaco, Manchester United, Sevilla, and AEK Athens. However, Monterrey fans had little chance to enjoy a forward with 30 caps for the French national team. Martial's first stint in Liga MX was a bitter one. Rayados de Monterrey had Anthony Martial's services from Matchday 9 of the 2025 Apertura. From Matchday 9 to 17, Martial saw playing time in every match, but only started in two of them. Nevertheless, Anthony Martial failed to contribute a single goal in his nine matches played in the Liga MX regular season. Martial also failed to provide any assists in the first phase of the tournament. Domenec Torrent, Rayados de Monterrey's manager, gradually lost confidence in the former Manchester United striker. In the 2025 Apertura playoffs, Martial saw playing time in 3 of Rayados de Monterrey's 4 matches, but he didn't start any of them from the opening whistle. Again, the striker from Massy wasn't influential in Monterrey's attack. In total, Anthony Martial only played 12 matches that season. The French striker was only on the field for 257 minutes (almost 3 full matches). Anthony Martial still has a lot to prove. The Frenchman will have another opportunity in the 2026 Clausura to score his first goal in Mexican soccer. Martial has a contract with Rayados de Monterrey until June 2027.
